Nøstetangen Glass

Norway's first glass works

Nøstetangen glassworks (1741–1777) was Norway's first glassworks for the production of crystal glass (white glass) and was located at Nøstetangen in Hokksund, on the promontory where the Vestfosselva flows into the Drammenselva.

The glassworks was built by Det Norske Compagnie (established 1739) during the reign of Christian VI as King of Denmark-Norway to supply both kingdoms with finer table glass. It was no longer desired that forests in Denmark be used for glassworks, there was not much forest left in Denmark and glassworks needed a lot of timber to fire the melting furnaces.
